Quick recap of the past week. B came in on Tuesday night. Its been real nice having her help watch Max while we take care of some other things.
Thursday night I caught the 11:30PM showing of Episode III. Since I'm sure nobody else has blogged about it yet, lemme give you a rundown of what happened and what I thought of the movie... naah! you know i wouldnt do that to you. Let's just say it was a good time, and leave it at that.
Friday I went to go pick up Russell from midway. We ended up not getting in until after 11 o'clock so we pretty much just called it a night.
Saturday we did a lot of running around. Rich came by and picked me up and we went to the
Brewster-Golatta fight (if thats what you wanna call it). The atmosphere for a live title fight is like nothing I could even begin to describe, but it definitely beats watching it on pay-per-view. We didnt know the night had 8 fights scheduled so we showed up a little after 4, when the first fight was scheduled. We were a little disappointed when we saw the lack of participation, until we realized that the people who decided to check the cards probably didnt want to stick around for 6 hours til the main event. There was a HUGE Polish turnout since there were 2 Polish dudes vying for titles that night, Andrew Gulotta at heavyweight and Tomasz Adamek at light-heavy. The marketing for the main event was calling the fight "Border War", since Gulotta is from Illinois and Brewster was from Indiana. No doubt building on the already seething animosity between the Illinois soybean farmers and the Indiana corn growers... Methinks Don King needs a new marketing staff.
Because of the crowd response, the Adamek fight was hella exciting to watch, but I was REAL disappointed with the outcome. Briggs simply pummelled Adamek and yet somehow Adamek got the decision. Adamek was throwing hard punches all night but they never got past Brigg's gloves. Adamek showed a lot of heart and/or that he's got a head like a cinderblock, but the last time I checked boxing judges didn't award points for being able to stand after you got your dome rocked. Briggs won that fight hands down. Oddly enough, Don King's first appearance of the night was right before the decision. I guess he wanted to keep the crowd happy to guarantee a good turnout the next time he shows his hair in Chi-town. If the fight happened anywhere else in the world, with the exception of maybe Warsaw, Briggs would have been the one with his hand raised at the end of that fight.
As for the Gulotta fight, no... actually from now on I'm going to call it the Brewster fight, seeing as how he was the only one fighting that night. As for the Brewster fight, theres not a whole lot to talk about... I'm sure there are video clips of all 53 seconds of it circulating around so I'll spare you the blow-by-blow. I'll just say that my favorite knockdown was the second (seeing a man, especially a big man, get knocked though the ropes is always a treat), and that I really like Brewster's chances of unifying some belts if he continues like he did on saturday. In some ways, Gulotta getting beat like that took the bad taste out of our mouths from the Adamek decision. It was like Brewster wasnt going to leave anything up to chance.
Sunday was a great day to just be out and about. We walked over to a great latin place,
La Fonda where I discovered that the only thing that could out-do the mojitos they make at the bar is the arroz marinero they make in the kitchen. After that we slept off the food coma for a couple of hours and then I took Russ back to the airport.
All in all, an eventful and exciting weekend. But now its back to the grind. Peaceindahood.
